Hakkında
The White-crested Tiger-Heron (Tigriornis leucolopha) is a medium-large heron of the family Ardeidae and the sole member of its genus. It is a secretive and poorly known bird of West and Central African rainforests, inhabiting dense lowland forest along streams and rivers. Adults have a cryptically patterned plumage of black and rufous-brown barring on the upperparts and wings — the tiger-like pattern that gives the genus its name — with a whitish or pale crest on the crown and nape. The underparts are whitish with dark streaking. The neck is long, the bill moderately long and slightly upturned at the tip, and the legs are greenish-yellow. Total length is approximately 60–80 cm.
The White-crested Tiger-Heron occupies a range extending from Sierra Leone and Guinea east through Cameroon, Gabon, the Republic of Congo, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Its range largely corresponds with the Guinea-Congo forest biome. It is closely associated with forested riverbanks and streams in primary and mature secondary lowland rainforest, where it forages along the water's edge and among emergent vegetation. It rarely ventures into open or disturbed habitats.
Like other tiger-herons, this species is crepuscular and nocturnal in its foraging activity, becoming active around dusk and dawn. It feeds on fish, frogs, crustaceans, and aquatic invertebrates, capturing prey by standing motionless at the water's edge and striking with a rapid lunge. Its cryptic plumage provides excellent camouflage against the dappled light of a forest stream margin, making it extremely difficult to detect when still.
Relatively little is known about the breeding biology of the White-crested Tiger-Heron compared to more accessible heron species. Nesting is believed to take place in trees over or near forest streams. The species is thought to be solitary and territorial outside the breeding season, consistent with its shy and secretive nature. It is generally detected by its distinctive, far-carrying calls — deep booming or hollow whooping notes — rather than by direct observation.
The species is listed as Least Concern by the IUCN, though ongoing deforestation in West and Central Africa poses a growing threat. As a forest specialist dependent on intact riverine habitats, it is vulnerable to logging and forest clearance that alters stream structure and riparian vegetation.
