A small tinamou with brown upperparts, white-spotted dark flanks, and a red-orange bill. Common in cerrado, dry woodland, and scrubby forest edges of central and eastern South America. Calls with a distinctive repetitive whistle. Highly terrestrial, running swiftly through low vegetation.

Plain grayish-brown upperparts with very fine dark vermiculations. Crown slightly darker. Throat pale whitish. Breast and flanks gray-brown; belly whitish. Reddish bill and legs. Sexes similar.
Habitat & Range
Cerrado, dry woodland, caatinga scrub, and forest edges from eastern Brazil through Bolivia, Paraguay, and northern Argentina. Tolerates degraded and secondary habitats. Common near agricultural land with remnant scrub.

Found in lowland forests and swampy areas from Colombia and Venezuela to southeastern Brazil. Sedentary; locally common.

Herbivorous waterfowl; grazes grasses and sedges near water; supplements diet with aquatic invertebrates in breeding season.
