Melampittidae

Melampittas; 2 species endemic to New Guinea's mountains—the Lesser and Greater Melampitta. Ground-dwelling, plump, nearly tail-less birds that run swiftly through montane forest undergrowth. Males jet-black; females browner. Long of uncertain affinity; now placed near lyrebirds based on molecular data.
