About These Birds
Ancash Tapaculo
The Ancash Tapaculo is a small Andean bird of the Rhinocryptidae family with a 10 cm wingspan, weighing around 15 grams. It lives in dense montane scrub in Peru's Ancash region. Like other tapaculos, it is cryptic and more easily detected by its calls.
Blackish Tapaculo
The Blackish Tapaculo is a small, rotund bird with blackish-gray plumage, a short cocked tail, and near-vestigial wings. It inhabits dense humid forest undergrowth, bamboo, and cloud forest in the Andes of Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru at elevations from 1,200 to 3,000 meters. It walks and hops through dense vegetation close to the ground, feeding on small insects and invertebrates, rarely flying.
