About These Birds
Amami Woodcock
Amami Woodcock: 34–36 cm, large rufous woodcock endemic to the Ryukyu Islands of Japan (Amami-Oshima, Tokunoshima). Inhabits dense subtropical forest. Nocturnal; probes soil for earthworms. NT. Threatened by feral mongooses introduced for snake control and habitat loss. Sedentary island endemic. Similar to Eurasian Woodcock.

Solitary Sandpiper: 18–21 cm, North American sandpiper with dark upperparts, white eye-ring, barred white outer tail feathers, and dark underwing. Breeds in boreal forest of North America, often using old tree nests. Winters along fresh water in Central and South America. Bobs like Common Sandpiper. Feeds on invertebrates.
