The rock pigeon is the ancestor of all domestic pigeon breeds and one of the most abundant birds in cities worldwide. Pigeons have served humans as messengers, food, and subjects for scientific research — their homing ability and vision have been studied extensively. Sumatran Green-pigeon (Treron oxyurus), 32 cm. Brilliant green with a pointed tail; male has a purple mantle patch. Endemic to Sumatra and Java, inhabiting montane forest from 700 to 2,400 m elevation. Frugivore feeding on figs and forest berries. Vulnerable owing to rapid deforestation across its restricted range.
