About These Birds

Yellow-billed Spoonbill

The Yellow-billed Spoonbill (Platalea flavipes) is a large wading bird endemic to Australia and belonging to the family Threskiornithidae. It is most readily distinguished from the co-occurring Royal Spoonbill by its pale yellow bill, facial skin, and legs — all yellowish rather than black — giving it a distinctive pale overall appearance. Adults are entirely white in body plumage and measure 76–92 cm in length with a wingspan of approximately 120–125 cm. During the breeding season, birds develop filamentous plumes …

Roseate Spoonbill

The roseate spoonbill is the only spoonbill species in the Americas and one of the most striking wading birds in the Western Hemisphere. Like flamingos, their pink color comes from carotenoid pigments in their crustacean prey. Nearly hunted to extinction for their plumes in the 19th century, they have recovered substantially.
