Oxpeckers; 2 species endemic to sub-Saharan Africa. Specialized passerines that cling to large mammals, feeding on ticks, flies, and wound secretions. Red-billed and Yellow-billed Oxpeckers. Controversial ecological role—both parasite control and wound-aggravation. Strong, sharp claws for gripping mammal skin.
