About These Birds
Heinroth's Shearwater
27 cm. Small dark shearwater; all sooty-brown with pale bill. Breeds Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea. Critically Endangered; extremely poorly known with only a handful of records. Breeding biology almost completely unknown; one of the rarest and least-studied seabirds.
Black-vented Shearwater
30–38 cm. Dark above with blackish undertail and vent; white below. Breeds islands off Baja California; ranges offshore in eastern Pacific to Peru. Near Threatened; affected by introduced predators on breeding islands. Feeds on fish; often seen from Baja California shore.
