Red Phalarope
Red Phalarope: 20–22 cm, offshore phalarope with a thick bill; breeding female has brick-red underparts and black cap. Breeds on High Arctic tundra; winters at sea, primarily in upwelling zones off west coasts of Africa and South America. Spins to concentrate zooplankton at surface. Polyandrous; males incubate. Long-distance oceanic migrant.

Inhabits moist woodland and shrubby margins in eastern North America; winters in southern US. Famous for spiralling courtship 'sky dance.' Migratory.
