About These Birds

Auckland Islands Shag

63 cm. Black and white; orange caruncles. Endemic to Auckland Islands, New Zealand subantarctic. Vulnerable; total population estimated at only a few thousand. Feeds on fish and invertebrates in surrounding cold ocean waters. Non-migratory; restricted to the island group.

Socotra Cormorant

80 cm. Large; dark brown with pale yellow gape and facial skin. Breeds on islands in the Persian Gulf, Gulf of Oman, and Red Sea. Vulnerable; faces threats from oil spills, human disturbance, and overfishing. Feeds on fish in warm Arabian Sea; colonial nester on flat, barren islands.
