About These Birds

Pallas's Gull

Pallas's Gull, 57–61 cm, is the world's largest hooded gull, breeding on Central Asian lakes and wintering in the Indian Ocean. Massive yellow bill with orange tip, black hood with white eye-crescents. Piscivore; plunge-dives and pirates food from other seabirds. Partially migratory.

Mediterranean Gull

Mediterranean Gull, 36–38 cm, has expanded dramatically since the 1970s, breeding across Europe from the Black Sea to Britain. Pure white body, jet-black hood in breeding plumage — the only gull with entirely white wingtips. Piscivore and invertivore; nests in colonies, often with Black-headed Gulls.
