New Zealand Storm-petrel
New Zealand Storm-petrel, 16–18 cm, was thought extinct for over 150 years until rediscovered in 2003 off the Hauraki Gulf. Breeding colony finally found in 2013 on Little Barrier Island. Dark above, white below with black stripe through belly. Endangered. Planktivore in New Zealand coastal and pelagic waters.
Polynesian Storm-petrel
Polynesian Storm-petrel, 25–26 cm, is the largest storm-petrel, breeding on tropical Pacific islands from the Marquesas to the Cook Islands. Two morphs: dark and white-bellied. Flies with distinctive high bounding style. Vulnerable; predated by introduced rats and cats on nesting islands. Planktivore.
