About These Birds

Surfbird: 23–26 cm, stocky rock-specialist sandpiper with a short yellow bill and bold black-and-white tail pattern in flight. Breeds on alpine rocky tundra of Alaska and Yukon; winters on rocky Pacific shores from Alaska south to Chile. Feeds on mussels, barnacles, and invertebrates among wave-washed rocks. Long-distance migrant.

African Snipe: 25–28 cm, medium-large snipe resident in high-altitude wetlands, bogs, and marshy grassland of eastern and southern Africa from Ethiopia and Sudan to the Cape. Cryptic brown-and-buff streaking. Probes soft mud for invertebrates. Sedentary. Performs display 'drumming' flights with spread tail in breeding season.
