About These Birds

Madagascar Jacana

Madagascar Jacana: 24–28 cm, Madagascar endemic similar to African Jacana but with a distinctive white hindneck and slightly paler blue frontal shield. Inhabits freshwater lakes and ponds with floating vegetation. Sedentary endemic. Polyandrous breeding system. Feeds on invertebrates and seeds. NT due to wetland drainage and hunting.

Northern Jacana

Northern Jacana: 19–23 cm, chestnut-and-black wader with brilliant yellow wing spurs and lobed frontal shield. Inhabits lily-pad-covered freshwater lakes and ponds from Mexico and Central America to Panama and the Greater Antilles. Polyandrous; males incubate and brood chicks. Walks on floating vegetation. Invertebrate and seed feeder.
