A tiny Phasianidae quail (~70 g) of grass-covered scrub and open woodland across peninsular India and Sri Lanka. Males are strikingly barred rufous and white; females are duller. Coveys scurry through dense grass understorey. Feeds on tiny seeds and invertebrates. Common in suitable habitat; Least Concern.

Male brown above with buff shaft streaks; white underparts densely barred dark brown; rufous face and throat. Female plain rufous-brown below with less barring; pale buff supercilium; red bill in male, yellow in female.

Endemic to India; resident of dry grassland, scrub, and rocky hillsides from the base of the Himalayas south through central and peninsular India.

Feeds on small seeds, invertebrates, and plant material in Indian grass scrub and forest edges.
