Yellow-crowned Night-Heron

The Yellow-crowned Night-Heron (Nyctanassa violacea) is a medium-sized heron of the family Ardeidae found throughout the Americas. It is the sole member of its genus and differs structurally and behaviorally from the Black-crowned Night-Heron (Nycticorax nycticorax). Adults are elegantly patterned with a blue-gray body, black and white facial pattern, a pale yellow to cream crown, and long white plumes trailing from the head in breeding plumage. The bill is stout and relatively thick compared to other herons, an adaptation for the preferred diet of hard-shelled crustaceans. Total length is 56–71 cm.

The Yellow-crowned Night-Heron inhabits coastal mangroves, saltwater and freshwater marshes, swamps, rocky coastlines, tidal mudflats, and freshwater streams and ponds, from the eastern and central United States south through Central America, the Caribbean, and coastal South America to Brazil and Ecuador. It is particularly abundant in mangrove systems and coastal areas where crabs and crayfish are plentiful. Some populations in the northern part of the range are migratory.

Unlike most herons, the Yellow-crowned Night-Heron feeds heavily and preferentially on crustaceans — particularly fiddler crabs (Uca species), crayfish, and other crabs — which can constitute the bulk of its diet. The thick, robust bill is adapted to crushing crab shells. It also takes fish, insects, worms, frogs, and small vertebrates. Foraging occurs mainly at dusk and dawn and during the night, consistent with the crepuscular and nocturnal habits shared by all night-herons.

Breeding is often colonial but the species also nests solitarily, particularly in mangrove settings. Nests are platforms of sticks built in trees or shrubs, sometimes at considerable height. The clutch usually contains three to five pale blue-green eggs, incubated by both parents for 21–25 days. Both sexes participate in raising the chicks, which fledge after five to six weeks. Immature birds are heavily streaked brown and white, resembling immature Black-crowned Night-Herons but with a more uniform dark brown pattern.

The species is listed as Least Concern. Populations are generally stable, though coastal habitat degradation, mangrove loss, and pesticide contamination of crustacean prey represent ongoing concerns in parts of its range.
