<birdfyi-bird slug="eriocnemis-nigrivestis"></birdfyi-bird>White puffs of feathering around the legs give the pufflegs their name, and in the Black-breasted Puffleg (Eriocnemis nigrivestis) the males pair them with a black breast. The species is a hummingbird of 10-11 cm, endemic to the north-western Andes of Ecuador between about 2,500 and 3,200 m, where it feeds on nectar at cloud forest and forest edge. Recorded birds weigh about 4.4 g with a wingspan near 11 cm. Two eggs form the clutch. Fewer than 250 individuals are thought to remain, and the IUCN Red List classifies the species as Endangered.
