# Camera Settings for Birds
Bird photography presents some of the most demanding technical challenges in the photography world. Your subjects are small, fast, unpredictable, and often at considerable distance. Mastering your camera settings is the foundation upon which all successful bird photography is built.
## Choosing the Right Mode
Most bird photographers work in aperture priority or manual mode. Aperture priority allows you to set the aperture and ISO while the camera selects the shutter speed. Manual mode gives complete control but requires more attention. Program mode and fully automatic modes are generally inadequate because the camera cannot predict your intent.
## Shutter Speed Guidelines
Shutter speed is the most critical setting. For stationary birds, use a minimum of 1/500 second. For birds walking or swimming, increase to 1/1000 second. For small birds hopping and foraging, 1/2000 second provides a safety margin. For birds in flight, 1/2500 to 1/4000 second is necessary to freeze wing motion.
These are minimums -- faster is always safer. Many experienced bird photographers set a minimum shutter speed of 1/2000 second and accept higher ISO values to maintain it. A sharp image with some noise is always preferable to a blurry image with clean tones.
## Aperture for Bird Photography
Most bird photography is shot at or near the maximum aperture of your lens to maximize light gathering and shutter speed. Wide apertures produce shallow depth of field, which isolates the subject against a smooth, blurred background -- one of the hallmarks of professional bird photography. When photographing multiple birds, stop down to f/8 or f/11 to increase depth of field.
## ISO and Noise Management
Modern cameras handle high ISO values remarkably well, and bird photographers routinely shoot at ISO 1600-6400 or higher. Do not fear high ISO -- noise can be reduced in post-processing, but blur cannot be corrected. Auto ISO with a maximum limit is a practical approach. Expose to the right when possible -- a slightly overexposed image contains more data and produces less noise when corrected.

Use continuous autofocus mode (AF-C or AI Servo) to track moving subjects. Modern cameras with animal or bird eye detection autofocus have transformed the field.
