Habitat fragmentation transforms continuous forest or grassland into a mosaic of small patches separated by unsuitable matrix. Fragment area and isolation determine how many bird species can persist — large, connected fragments hold viable populations of interior-specialist species while small, isolated fragments support only generalists. Edge-to-interior ratios in fragmented landscapes increase exposure to nest predators and brood parasites, compounding the direct habitat loss. Corridor creation and matrix improvement are the primary mitigation strategies.
