Definição
Changes in species composition and abundance at the boundary between two habitat types.
Explicação detalhada
Habitat edges between forest and open land often support higher species richness than interior habitats, attracting generalist species. However, edge effect can be detrimental for forest interior specialists: brood parasites (cowbirds) and nest predators penetrate farther from edges into forest fragments, reducing nesting success. In highly fragmented landscapes, almost no forest remains more than a few hundred meters from an edge, effectively eliminating interior-specialist species from large areas.
