Widespread across India, Sri Lanka, China, and South-East Asia. Inhabits open grassland, scrub, and agricultural land. Polyandrous; distinctive purring call of female.

Inhabits dry grassland, scrub, and open woodland from southern Spain and West Africa east to India. Polyandrous; female makes deep purring call.
