The great horned owl is the most powerful and widespread owl in the Americas, earning the nickname tiger of the sky. It is one of the earliest nesting birds, often laying eggs in January when snow still covers the ground. The Biak Scops-owl is a near-threatened small owl endemic to Biak Island in West Papua, Indonesia. It has cryptic brown-mottled plumage with small ear tufts typical of scops-owls. It inhabits lowland and hill forests, hunting insects and small vertebrates at night, and its very restricted range makes it sensitive to habitat changes.
