Males are dark grey with a blackish throat bib, while females are barred brownish. Extensive deforestation on Mindanao has substantially reduced its forest habitat, placing this species under significant pressure.

The Ashy Minivet is a sleek passerine that breeds in East Asia and winters across South and Southeast Asia. Weighing about 23g with a wingspan near 19cm, the male is pale grey and white while the female has yellow-tinged plumage. It forages in the forest canopy, catching insects on the wing.
