The Black-backed Puffback is a medium-sized shrike-like bird of woodland, bush, and garden habitats across eastern and southern Africa. Males are glossy black above and white below, and during display, the male erects his white rump feathers into a fluffy puff-ball. It feeds on insects gleaned from foliage and bark.
