About These Birds

Cape Verde Shearwater

43–47 cm. Smaller than Cory's Shearwater; grey-brown above, white below with yellow bill. Breeds Cape Verde Islands. Migrates south through east Atlantic to south Atlantic and Indian Ocean. Near Threatened; threatened by introduced cats and rats; feeds on fish and squid.

Balearic Shearwater

30–38 cm. Brown above; variably dirty-white to brown below; often shows brown smudging on flanks. Breeds only Balearic Islands, Spain. Critically Endangered with fewer than 3,000 pairs; faces extinction. Migrates to NE Atlantic; threatened by predators, fishing bycatch, and tourist development.
