About These Birds

75–95 cm. Black with silver-white streaking on wings; males develop chestnut neck with white stripe in breeding. Found throughout fresh and brackish water of the Americas. Swims with body submerged; spears fish with kinked neck. Spreads wings to dry; colonial rooster.

85–97 cm. Dark brown and black with white streaking; long neck and sharp bill. Resident across South and Southeast Asia to East Africa in freshwater and estuarine habitats. Near Threatened; declining due to wetland loss and hunting. Spears fish underwater; colonial breeder.
