Um alcídeo de médio porte da família Alcidae, que habita as costas rochosas do Atlântico Norte. A Torda-mergulhão (Alca torda) nidifica em colônias nas falésias costeiras na Islândia, Grã-Bretanha, Escandinávia, Groenlândia e leste do Canadá. Mede aproximadamente 38-43 cm. Caracterizada pelo bico comprimido lateralmente com marca branca vertical. Excelente mergulhadora, pode alcançar profundidades de 120 m para capturar peixes. Passa o inverno no mar aberto. Classificada como Pouco Preocupante pela UICN, embora as populações tenham sofrido declínio.

The Atlantic puffin, often called the clown of the sea, is a charismatic seabird that nests in burrows on northern sea cliffs. Puffins can carry up to a dozen fish crosswise in their beaks at once thanks to backward-facing spines on their palate. Climate change and overfishing are threatening their food supply, leading to population declines.
