Um gavião de floresta da família Accipitridae, amplamente distribuído na África Subsaariana. O Gavião-africano (Accipiter tachiro) habita florestas tropicais e subtropicais em toda a África Subsaariana. Mede aproximadamente 34-44 cm. Semelhante ao Açor Europeu mas menor. Alimenta-se principalmente de aves, mas também de lagartos e mamíferos pequenos. É o equivalente africano do Açor em termos ecológicos. Adaptado à caça dentro de florestas densas. The Black Harrier is an endangered, medium-sized raptor endemic to southern Africa with almost entirely black plumage, bold white barring on the tail, and characteristic pale eyes. It inhabits lowland fynbos, Renosterveld, and wetland edges primarily in the Western and Northern Cape provinces of South Africa. It hunts by quartering low over open terrain, capturing small mammals, birds, reptiles, and insects.
