Mede apenas 20-27 cm, tornando-o um dos menores gaviões do mundo. Apesar do pequeno porte, caça ativamente pequenas aves. Caracterizado pelas partes inferiores finamente barradas. É uma espécie florestal discreta, raramente observada. Classificado como Pouco Preocupante pela UICN.
