A small Phasianidae partridge (~270 g) of lowland and hill dipterocarp forests in the Thai-Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, and Borneo. Characterised by a chestnut gorget on the upper breast. Forages for seeds and invertebrates in dense understorey. Vulnerable from extensive lowland forest conversion.

Brown upperparts with dark scaling; broad chestnut pectoral band across buff-white breast; white supercilium; pale orange-buff flanks; green legs. Female paler with narrower or absent chestnut necklace.
Habitat & Range

Resident of lowland and hill forest in peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra, and southern Thailand, from sea level to 1,000 m.
Diet & Feeding
Ground forager; eats seeds, berries, invertebrates, and small animals in SE Asian lowland and foothill forest.

Clear, ringing 'wii-OO' whistle from Bornean forest understorey; pure and slightly mournful. Alarm is a sharp explosive 'kek'. Pairs call in loose coordination at dawn. Contact notes low, clucking.
