A small Phasianidae partridge (~265 g) of the open steppes and agricultural lands of Central Asia and northern China. Closely related to the Grey Partridge but smaller and paler. Gregarious in coveys; diet comprises grass seeds and invertebrates. Locally abundant; Least Concern.

Pale sandy-buff face and supercilium; grey-brown finely vermiculated upperparts; grey breast; white underparts with reduced or absent chestnut horseshoe patch; chestnut-barred flanks; smaller than Grey Partridge.

Resident of open steppe and farmland in central Asia from Kazakhstan east through Mongolia to northeastern China and adjacent Russia.

Feeds on grass seeds, grain, and plant material; supplements with insects and invertebrates, particularly during breeding season.
