Um gavião de tamanho médio da família Accipitridae que se reproduz na Europa Oriental e migra para a África Oriental. O Gavião-de-asa-curta (Accipiter brevipes) reproduz em florestas caducifólias nos Bálcãs, Turquia e região caspiana, migrando para o sul através do Oriente Médio para invernar na África Oriental. Mede aproximadamente 30-37 cm. Voa em bandos durante a migração, comportamento incomum para gaviões. Alimenta-se principalmente de lagartos, pequenas aves e insetos. Classificado como Pouco Preocupante pela UICN.
