Um gavião pequeno e ágil da família Accipitridae, amplamente distribuído na África e na Ásia. O Gavião-xadrez (Accipiter badius) habita florestas secas, savanas arborizadas e áreas cultivadas da África Subsaariana e do sul da Ásia. Mede aproximadamente 26-30 cm. Caracterizado pelas listras da garganta e partes inferiores barradas. Alimenta-se principalmente de lagartos, pequenas aves e insetos grandes. É um caçador ágil capaz de perseguir presas através da vegetação densa. Classificado como Pouco Preocupante pela UICN.
