# Major Flyways of the World

Bird migration follows broad routes connecting breeding grounds with wintering areas, forming aerial highways that span continents and hemispheres. These flyways channel billions of birds along predictable paths each spring and autumn.

## What Are Flyways?

A flyway is a geographic region within which migratory birds travel between breeding and non-breeding areas. The world's migratory birds are broadly organized into eight major flyways. Flyways are defined by geography -- mountain ranges, ocean barriers, and desert crossings funnel migrants through bottlenecks where millions concentrate.

## The Americas Flyways

North and South America contain four recognized flyways: the Atlantic, Mississippi, Central, and Pacific. The **Atlantic Flyway** follows the eastern seaboard. Delaware Bay is one of its critical stopover sites, with over a million shorebirds refueling in a few weeks. The **Mississippi Flyway** follows the Mississippi River valley -- the broadest and most heavily trafficked. Trans-Gulf migrants fly 1,000 km non-stop across open water. The **Pacific Flyway** follows the western coast and interior valleys.

## The East Atlantic Flyway

This flyway connects Arctic breeding grounds with western Africa. It channels raptors and storks through narrow Mediterranean crossing points -- Gibraltar, the Bosporus, the Strait of Messina. The Wadden Sea supports over 10 million waterbirds annually. The Banc d'Arguin in Mauritania supports over two million wintering waterbirds.

## The Central Asian Flyway

The least studied and most threatened flyway stretches from Siberia through Central Asia to the Indian subcontinent. Bar-headed geese cross the Himalayas at altitudes exceeding 7,000 meters -- one of the most extraordinary feats in bird migration. India's declining wetlands threaten the entire flyway.

## The East Asian-Australasian Flyway

The most threatened flyway in the world. The Yellow Sea between China and Korea -- one of the world's most important tidal flat ecosystems -- has lost over 65 percent of its intertidal habitat since the 1980s. Recent UNESCO World Heritage designations in China and South Korea are beginning to slow habitat loss. The East Asian-Australasian Flyway Partnership coordinates conservation across 22 partner countries.
