Plumage details are often the first thing beginners try to observe, but experienced birders know that shape and behavior are frequently more reliable and more quickly assessed. A bird's overall impression -- its gestalt -- is often all you need.
## The GISS Method
GISS stands for General Impression of Size and Shape, a method developed by military aircraft spotters and adopted by birders. Rather than focusing on specific field marks, GISS relies on the overall look and feel of a bird. With practice, you can identify many species at distances where plumage details are invisible. A distant bird on a wire might be identifiable as a shrike by its upright posture, hooked head profile, and long tail. GISS is not a replacement for careful plumage observation -- it is a complementary skill that works alongside it.
## Body Shape and Proportions
Body proportions are remarkably diagnostic. Consider the relative size of the head, the length and thickness of the bill, the length of the neck, the shape of the body, the length of the tail, and the length of the legs. A bird with a large head, short tail, and stocky body is likely a kingfisher, nuthatch, or parrot. A bird with a tiny head, long neck, and long legs is a heron or crane. These proportions are visible at great distances and in poor light.
## Behavior as an Identification Tool
How a bird behaves is as diagnostic as how it looks. Treecreepers spiral up tree trunks and fly to the base of the next tree. Nuthatches walk headfirst down tree trunks -- a behavior unique among passerines. Wagtails bob their tails constantly. Dippers plunge into rushing water and walk along stream beds.
Feeding behavior is particularly informative. Does the bird feed on the ground or in the canopy? Does it probe, peck, glean, hover, or hawk for insects? Does it feed alone or in flocks? These behavioral cues narrow identification possibilities.
