정의
A young bird that remains in the nest and is entirely dependent on its parents for food and warmth.
상세 설명
Nestlings of altricial species (passerines, raptors, herons) are entirely dependent on parents for thermoregulation (brooding) and food delivery. They develop rapidly, typically fledging in 10-30 days. Their brightly colored gapes and solicitation calls (begging) stimulate parental feeding responses — the gape color signals hunger level and health to parents making allocation decisions among nest-mates. Nestlings eject fecal sacs (in passerines) or defecate over the nest rim (in raptors), maintaining nest hygiene.
