Jizz (possibly derived from GISS — General Impression, Shape and Size) is the gestalt impression experienced observers accumulate through extensive field time with a species. It encompasses the way a bird moves (does it hop or run?), its flight action (bounding, direct, wheeling), posture (upright, horizontal), and foraging behavior. Jizz allows rapid species recognition at distances or in conditions where field marks are invisible, and forms an important complementary skill alongside mark-by-mark identification.
