About These Birds
Great Cuckoo-Dove
Large cuckoo-dove, 45–50 cm, with rufous-brown upperparts, a pale grey head and breast, and a very long, broadly barred tail. Found in lowland and hill forests of the Moluccas, New Guinea, and Bismarck Archipelago. Frugivore of large forest fruits. Impressive size makes it one of the largest cuckoo-doves. Least Concern.
African Collared-dove
Small dove, 26–29 cm, pale pinkish-grey with a black hindneck collar and white tail corners. Native to arid zones of sub-Saharan Africa from Senegal to Somalia and south to Tanzania. The ancestor of the domesticated Barbary Dove (ring-necked dove). Granivore of grass seeds and small grains in dry savanna, farmland, and desert edge. Least Concern.
