About These Birds
Rufous-faced Crake
Rufous-faced Crake (Laterallus xenopterus) is a small 14–16 cm crake of central South America, found in Paraguay, Brazil, and Bolivia. Dark brown above; bright rufous face and breast with white-and-black barred flanks. Inhabits wet grasslands and marshes. Secretive and little-studied; detected primarily by call.
White Swamphen
White Swamphen (Porphyrio albus) is an extinct all-white swamphen formerly endemic to Lord Howe Island, Australia. Known from specimens collected around 1790 and early drawings; had reduced wings indicating flightlessness or near-flightlessness. Extirpated by hunting after European discovery. Related to Australasian Swamphen.
