지중해검은머리갈매기는 지중해와 흑해에 서식하는 중형 갈매기이다. 번식기에는 완전히 검은 머리를 가지며 흰 날개 끝이 특징이다. 해안과 내륙 습지에서 번식하며 물고기와 수생 무척추동물을 먹는다.

Grey above and below in breeding plumage, white cheek patch below the black cap. Piscivore; plunge-dives in coastal waters. Some movement to winter quarters in East African coasts.
