About These Birds

Greater Flamingo

The greater flamingo is the most widespread flamingo species and one of the most recognizable birds in the world. Their pink color comes entirely from carotenoid pigments in their crustacean and algal diet. Flamingos are social birds that breed in enormous colonies sometimes numbering tens of thousands.

Chilean Flamingo

Chilean Flamingo (Phoenicopterus chilensis) is a large 100–130 cm flamingo of South America. Pale pink plumage with pinkish legs and distinctive grey-banded knee joints; pink-black bill. Inhabits saline lakes, coastal lagoons, and estuaries from Ecuador south to Argentina and Tierra del Fuego. Feeds by filter-feeding on algae and invertebrates.
