Perches on exposed boulders mid-river; hawks insects from rocks. Sedentary. Highly site-faithful to river reaches. Invertebrate feeder.

Resident in dry miombo and acacia woodland of sub-Saharan Africa from Senegal to Ethiopia and south to Zimbabwe. Insectivorous; most active at night. Cryptic and difficult to see in daytime.
