Breeds on Scandinavian and Russian boreal bog; winters in sub-Saharan Africa. Performs extraordinary long-distance non-stop flights of up to 6,800 km. NT. Lek-breeding. Invertebrate feeder.

Inhabits mossy forest above 1,000 m; probes leaf litter and soft soil for invertebrates. NT. Threatened by logging and agricultural conversion of highland forest. Sedentary island endemic.
