About These Birds

Black-bellied Storm-petrel

Black-bellied Storm-petrel, 19–21 cm, breeds on sub-Antarctic islands and disperses widely across the Southern Ocean. Dark above with white rump; distinctive black streak through the white belly. Patters over wave surfaces picking up plankton. Long-distance pelagic movements after breeding.

Pincoya Storm-petrel

Pincoya Storm-petrel, 16–18 cm, was described as a new species only in 2013 from the Chiloé Archipelago of Chile. One of the most recently discovered birds in the Americas. Dark with white belly patch. Breeds in Chilean fjords — unusual for storm-petrels. Forages over cold sub-Antarctic coastal waters.
