수컷은 어두운 배와 라켓 끝이 있는 길고 전선 같은 외부 꼬리 깃털을 가진 7–8cm(그외 꼬리 깃털 포함) 소형 벌새로 콜롬비아 동부에서 아마존을 거쳐 볼리비아·브라질까지 저지림에 서식한다. 삼림 수관부와 가장자리에서 꿀을 먹는다.

These tiny birds beat their wings about 53 times per second and can fly backwards, sideways, and even briefly upside down. They make an extraordinary non-stop 800 km crossing of the Gulf of Mexico during migration.
