캐나다 북부 툰드라에서 번식하고 남아메리카 해안에서 월동하는 소형 도요새. 비교적 짧고 굵은 부리와 갈색 등면이 특징이다. 조간대 갯벌과 모래사장에서 주로 먹이를 찾는다. 이동 경로에서 종종 대규모 무리를 형성한다.
