북극 툰드라와 해안 절벽에서 번식하는 땅딸막한 소형 도요새로, 북대서양과 유럽 북부 해안에서 월동한다. 어두운 색의 등면이 특징이다. 조간대 암반에서 갑각류와 홍합을 먹는다. 겨울철에도 얼어붙지 않은 해안에서 거주한다.
