북극 고지대에서 번식하는 중형 도요새로 전 세계 연안에서 대규모로 월동한다. 번식깃은 밝은 주황빛 아랫면을 가진다. 이동 중에는 무리를 지어 날아다니며 먹이인 투구게 알을 먹기 위해 델라웨어 만에 집결하는 것으로 유명하다.
