미국 남서부에서 남아메리카까지 분포하는 중대형 참매. 거의 전체가 검은색이며 비행 중 날개 아랫면에 흰 반점이 뚜렷하다. 사막, 관목지대, 산악지형에서 서식하며, 도마뱀, 소형 포유류, 작은 새를 주식으로 한다. 부분적 철새로 고도에 따라 이동한다.
